The Necronomicon Tarot is a beautifully illustrated deck based on H. P. Lovecraft’s Cthulhu Mythos. The artwork for this deck was created by Anne Stokes under the direction of Donald Tyson to fit in with his novels which are an expansion of and homage to Lovecraft’s mythos. As such, the artwork of this deck has very little in common with the more traditional decks.
Although this deck is accurate when the cards are read with the traditional meanings, they do (as with every deck) have their own unique way of speaking, and I have enjoyed learning their language.
This deck is published through Llewellyn, but don’t let that put you off. It does mean that the bag that comes with the deck is a bit flimsy, and the book is well printed, but not as informative as you might hope for if this is your first deck.
As this deck does tie into the Cthulhu Mythos, I recommend a good knowledge of both tarot and the mythos to really get the most from working with this deck.

We wondered whether it was a ‘How many fingers am I holding up?’ kind of question. We spent some time deliberating over it, and then it took a while to figure out a spread that would address it intelligently. To simplifiy things we reframed your question to become ‘Will I have a child in the next 18 months?’ We hope you’re pleased with the result.

Interpretation:

The first card is the right way up, indicating a Yes answer to the question- ‘Will I have a child in the next 18 months?’ (The Moon can indicate an underlying error or deception at the point of the question, but for our purpose we will take it in good faith.) Your fertility is not, or is no longer, in question.

The card contributing to this result is principally seen as a clever man who is prone to being over- authoritarian. In his dark moments this is a character who wouldn’t think twice about bending you to his will, simply because he finds it hard to imagine other people’s feelings. By having a child, would you be escaping from this situation, or are you making yourself more vulnerable to it? He could be an unsympathetic doctor, or, in the case of a fostered/adopted child, he would represent the state, which may have hindered the arrangement.

You can improve your situation by keeping a firm grip on reality. You may feel hemmed in by your physical circumstances, but it is possible to take control of them. Sort out your money, your housing, your physical fitness and make good use of the material means at your disposal. Get ready to start all over again- this is a blessing.

Your future outcome holds a warning- someone is getting away with something at another’s expense- in the short term. If you suspect anyone of disloyalty your suspicions are correct. Or you may be the one to feel desperate enough to cut your losses and make off with what you can. We must all do what we need to in order to survive, but we mustn’t do it lightly. Whoever’s pride is hurt will rearm and grow stronger.

January -  April

An idea or project, the seeds of which may have been sewn in the previous year, is beginning to grow.  You are now waiting patiently for your effort to be rewarded and your project to come into fruition.

May – August

Around the middle of the year, the tension caused by of all this waiting may make you feel as though you are mentally “losing balance”.  However, the creative spirit which has been nurturing your ideas can help you to keep your grip.  Keeping this in mind will cradle any fall.

September – December

First off we can see from the cards a very fiery masculine influence, and a strong indication that the reading relates to your professional life. The Ace of Wands is a good start to any reading about studies or career as it signifies new beginnings entered into with strength, aggression, and eagerness. Followed by The Sun, the placement of which represents the present, indicates that the projects signified by the Ace of Wands have been/will be successfully completed, not only that but the sun also signifies love and optimism. The New Orleans Voodoo Tarot, based on the stunning paintings by Sallie Ann Glassman, stirred some controversy when it appeared in 1992. Some questioned the wisdom of this heady blending of Kabbalah, Vodoun, and Santeria with modern occult philosophy. But they rarely doubted the power and beauty of Glassman’s visionary artwork. Over the years this deck has secured its reputation by proving its potency as a divinatory tool.

Frankly this tarot wipes the floor with any other so-called gothic or urban decks. Interestingly this is because it nods firmly in the direction of the Marseilles and surrealist traditions- both currently unfashionable in the English-speaking tarot scene.

The ingredients really shouldn’t work: bold computer graphics, collage, an eighties goth/industrial sensibility, humour, and a desire to depict tarot concepts in modern life. But it works. This deck was conceived by Patrick Valenza in his childhood. We eagerly await his next project.
